Membership benefits
Established in 1998, through the merger of Museum Directors Federation (MDF) and Museums Association of Aotearoa New Zealand (MAANZ), Museums Aotearoa membership is open to individuals/institutions who subscribe to and act in accordance with our Code of Ethics.
Museums Aotearoa strives to be the strong, objective, fully representative voice for the evolving museum community, and to promote a shared sense of professionalism, solidarity and identity. Museums Aotearoa is actively involved in promotion of individual as well as museum member opportunities.
In becoming a member of the national professional body you signal your commitment to the museum sector, its ethics and principles.
Membership entitles you to one free copy of the following publications:
- Directory of Museums of Aotearoa, (updated annually) and free listing for Museum and Associate members.
- e-museums NEWS – a monthly compilation of museum relevant news clippings,
emailed at the beginning of each month. - e-museums NOTICES - keeps you informed of relevant conferences and issues affecting
museums, emailed mid-month. - Code of Ethics – outlines responsibilities of Museums, Governing Bodies
and staff to collections and public. - Strategy for the Museum Sector in New Zealand 2005
- Te Ara - the biannual journal of Museums Aotearoa

Individual Members
Individual membership is open to all persons who subscribe to and act in accordance with the Code of Ethics of Museums Aotearoa, and who are employed or engaged by a Museum, or who support the objects of Museums Aotearoa. This membership is not transferrable.
Museum Members
‘Museum’ means an organisation which is primarily engaged in collecting, caring for, developing, exhibiting or interpreting the natural and cultural heritage of Aotearoa / New Zealand. The term includes marae and exhibition galleries, or centres which are maintained on an on-going basis by other organisations. Membership is open to all museums which subscribe to and act in accordance with the Code of Ethics of Museums Aotearoa.
Associate Members
An Associate is an individual or organisation associated with the museum sector, as a patron or service provider. Associate members must have their application endorsed by a Museum Member, and are entitled to a Directory listing. Associated Members List
