Membership

Museums Aotearoa is the independent professional association for the New Zealand museum sector. We provide leadership to raise the profile and performance of museums throughout the country. We are fully funded by members' fees, which means we work exclusively for our members.

Membership is open to institutions and individuals who subscribe to and act in accordance with our Code of Ethics. In becoming a member, you signal your commitment to the museum sector, its ethics and principles.

We keep members up to date with the latest news and developments occuring throughout the country's museum community. We also provide a number of special benefits and discounts.

Museums Aotearoa was established in 1998, through the merger of Museum Directors Federation (MDF) and Museums Association of Aotearoa New Zealand (MAANZ).

Museum Membership

Our institutional members support Museums Aotearoa to be a strong professional organisation for the museum sector in New Zealand. Click here for the current list of members.

‘Museum’ means an organisation which is primarily engaged in collecting, caring for, developing, exhibiting or interpreting the natural and cultural heritage of Aotearoa / New Zealand. The term includes marae and exhibition galleries, or centres which are maintained on an on-going basis by other organisations. Membership is open to all museums which subscribe to and act in accordance with the Code of Ethics of Museums Aotearoa.

Membership provides access to all the benefits listed below (under Individual Membership), as well as qualifying employed staff and active volunteers for significantly reduced Individual Membership fees.

Individual Membership

Individual membership is open to all persons who subscribe to and act in accordance with the Code of Ethics of Museums Aotearoa, and who are employed or engaged by a Museum, or who support the objects of Museums Aotearoa. This membership is not transferrable.

Individual Membership of Museums Aotearoa will provide you with a number of direct benefits. These include:

  • A new and revised Membership Card Benefit Scheme to be launched in 2011. This will provide substantial benefits including free or discounted entry into a range of museums and galleries throughout New Zealand

  • Regular news about other New Zealand museums through our exclusive media service, as well as notices about national and international events and conferences, and updates about issues affecting museums

  • Access to Ngā Kaitiaki Māori, a special interest group for Māori staff in museums

  • Advocacy with the government and lobbying for the promotion of museums in the community

  • Eligibility for election to the Museums Aotearoa Board

  • Discounted rates to our annual Museums Aotearoa conference, and discounted advertising opportunities in our publications

  • Free products such as our annual Directory of New Zealand Museums & Galleries, and Museums Aotearoa Quarterly.

Associate Members

Our Associate Members are individuals or organisations associated with the museum sector, as patrons and service providers. Click here for the current list of members.

Associate members are entitled to a free listing in our Directory, and must have their application endorsed by a Museum Member.

Payment/Refund policy: Museums Aotearoa membership is annual, from January-December each year. Please fill in the appropriate application form above, and the Museums Aotearoa office will confirm pricing with you. If you wish to cancel your membership within 30 days of subscribing, please contact the Museums Aotearoa office for a full refund. No refunds after this period will be given.
