The Head of Public Programmes is a new strategic position at AWMM and is a fantastic leadership opportunity for someone looking to further develop their career in the museum sector. This three year fixed term role is within the Public Programmes and Capital Projects Directorate, which is responsible for the public offer on site and off site and for the future development of the museum through a master plan.

The Head of Public Programmes will bring exceptional creative leadership and high level management to the development and delivery of a dynamic, high quality public programme. The programme includes exhibitions, events, learning and outreach. The aim of the programme is to achieve audience development and increased engagement with the museum and its extensive collections by providing compelling visitor experiences for people of all ages, backgrounds and cultures.

Working extensively with a wide range of external organisations is a key element to the role. Likewise, the role-holder will work with cross-functional teams to ensure that programmes are planned, delivered and evaluated within a strategic framework and over a long period. Excellent planning and project management skills are required, along with a strong audience and collections focus.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Proven experience in the development, planning and delivery of public programmes within a museum environment
  • Significant expertise and recent experience in at least one of the areas of the public offer: exhibitions, events, learning and outreach
  • An understanding of, and some experience across, the breadth of the public programme
  • Excellent people management and communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills alongside a collaborative approach, be creative and decisive
  • A demonstrated understanding and a passion for the potential of the museum collections to engage audiences and have a commitment to diversifying and broadening audiences

Auckland Museum is committed to a bi-cultural approach. Therefore, an understanding of the application of tenants of the Treaty of Waitangi is essential and competence in Te Reo is desirable.
