  • Curatorial Internship in Contemporary Art, Dunedin Public Art Gallery

    10 month, fixed term commencing March 2012

    The Dunedin Public Art Gallery is offering someone with a commitment to contemporary curatorial practice, the opportunity to learn and participate in a 10 month mentored relationship with key staff at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.

    The Curatorial Intern position in Contemporary Art is a training position for emerging New Zealand curators, supported by funding from Creative New Zealand in conjunction with the Dunedin Public Art Gallery; a Department of the Dunedin City Council.

    The Intern will be a member of the Gallery’s public programmes and collection teams and be involved in working alongside, and supporting these teams, particularly in all areas relating to the curation and presentation of exhibitions with a contemporary focus, public programmes and publications.

    Tasks designed to train and provide experience for the intern will require the appointee to work collegially within a team environment, and involve working with artists, text writing for exhibitions and publications, developing conservation and art handling knowledge, exhibition design and layout, interaction with the public, and contributing to the development and presentation of visitor programmes.

    Applicants must be creative, aesthetic and open minded, articulate and keen to work responsively with a small team. They will be knowledgeable of, and stimulated by contemporary art in all its manifestations, have a talent for writing and an understanding and appreciation for visual culture. They must have a willingness to take on the diverse tasks required of a trainee curator in a busy public gallery environment.

    The position is a fixed term contract for 10 months, averaging a minimum of 37.5 hours per week, with a commencement date in March 2012. The recipient will receive a stipend of $3,000 gross per month, excluding overheads ($18.46/hour).

    Collections Curator, Aigantighe Art Gallery, Timaru


    Aigantighe Art Gallery, the dynamic public art museum in Timaru with a rich collection of historic and contemporary art, is seeking a Collections Curator. This position involves contact with artists, donors, teachers, students, art museum professionals and the public.

    You will be responsible for all aspects of collection management, along with assisting in exhibitions, public programmes and general running of the gallery.

    You need to be methodical, attentive to detail, creative, enthusiastic and have good communication skills. You will need to climb ladders and lift objects as part of your workload.

    You will also have a tertiary qualification in Art History and possibly Museum Studies. A current NZ driver’s licence is required.
